Draughts is a board game with 64 black and white chequered squares, similar to Chess. Each player has 12 pieces, which are usually fat circular counters. Although the actual hues of the pieces and the board do not have to be black and white, they are commonly referred to as black and white. The board is positioned between the two opponents so that both players' near right-hand corner squares are white (in the same way as for Chess). Black is always the first to play. To determine which player will be black, a coin is tossed. Each player's pieces are placed on the 12 black squares closest to them. The game does not use the white squares; the pieces only travel diagonally and remain on the black squares throughout. The game's goal is to either capture all of the opponent's pieces or create a situation in which the opponent is unable to move.
