The Porsche Boxster and Cayman are two-door, two-seater roadster (Boxster) and three-door, two-seater fastback coupé (Cayman) mid-engine two-seater sports vehicles developed and sold by Porsche throughout four versions (Cayman). The first generation Boxster debuted in 1996, followed by the second generation Boxster and the Cayman in late 2005, and finally the third generation in 2012. The Porsche 718 Boxster and Porsche 718 Cayman have been sold as separate models since the fourth generation was introduced in 2016. Boxster's inscription on the nameplate is a combination of a boxer, which refers to the engine's flat or boxer design, and a roadster, which refers to the body form. Cayman's name is an alternate spelling of caiman, an alligator family member.
