In Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia, there is a Hindu temple called Pura Luhur Batukaru. The temple, one of nine kayangan jagat (directional temples), is situated on the southern slope of Mount Batukaru, Bali's second-highest volcano. Its purpose is to guard Bali against bad spirits. Pura Luhur Batukaru was initially constructed in the 11th century and intended to honour Tabanan's ancestors' rajas. In 1959, it was reconstructed after being demolished in 1604. The most significant shrine in the temple is a seven-tiered Meru honouring Mahadewa, the God of Mount Batukaru. For Bali's Hindu community, Pura Luhur Batukaru continues to be an exceedingly sacred location. A large portion of the property is closed to visitors for numerous ceremonies and events held on the complex's grounds throughout the year. Before climbing to the top of Mount Batukaru, one must first stop at the temple. Once a year, hundreds of pilgrims may make the annual pilgrimage to the peak, walking its pathways all at once.
