The dimetrodon is a fascinating creature because although it looked like a dinosaur, it is a prehistoric reptile known as a pelycosaur. The dimetrodon lived 50 million years before the first dinosaur had evolved in the Permian era that is between 299 to 252 million years ago. At first glance, the dimetrodon appears like a dinosaur with features such as scaly skin and sharp teeth. This creature is in the category of the first group of animals known as the Synapsids that are 4-legged with a backbone that includes modern-day mammals and the ancient relatives of the mammals. The dimetrodon has a unique large sail-like dorsal fin on its back that is used to regulate its body temperature.
